A. JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Pipeman Apprentice Duties:
Under close supervision as an apprentice in training, must be able to perform routine task involving the installation and abandoning of components of gas distribution system, operate equipment and machinery performing pipe work in the construction and maintenance of gas infrastructure, and must be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned:
1. Identify abnormal operating conditions.
2. Assist in installing, maintaining or removing components of the gas distribution system.
3. Operate machinery and tools in the installation, maintenance, and removal of components of gas distribution system.
4. Use hand or power tools to cut, thread pipe, tap, align, bend and make up related fittings in the construction, maintenance and the removal of gas components of gas distribution system.
5. Do internal and external cleaning operations on parts and equipment, removing dirt, rust, scale, etc., using hand or power tools as required.
6. Assist in taking measurements, cutting, threading, and joining pipe by making up threaded connections and thermal fusion techniques for plastic pipe.
7. Assist in responding to emergency gas situations, taking control of the scene, establishing safely perimeter and evacuation zone, determine procedure and perform safe gas shutdown.
8. Perform thermal fusion techniques in the installation and maintenance of plastic pipe distribution systems.
9. Assist in locating and repairing all types of leaks or damages in the gas distribution system.
10. Assist in corrosion control related work bonding compression couplings, clearing shorts, cleaning valves and installing isolating fittings.
11. Operate Company's light and heavy-duty trucks and automobiles with or without trailers in a safe manner.
12. Perform necessary housekeeping and any other general labor tasks assigned.
13. Make minor automotive and machinery repairs.
14. Maintain oil, grease and inspect all equipment and machinery required to operate.
15. Assist in loading and unloading machinery, materials and supplies
16. Be responsible for the withdrawal and return of material and controlled tools from and to the storeroom.
17. Perform atmospheric corrosion meter set inspections.
18. Assist in installing anodes and take pipe to soil potentials.
19. Demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities on specific task covered of the position for the purpose of complying with Department of Transportation, Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration.
Pipeman 2nd Class Duties:
1. All duties of an Apprentice Pipeman.
2. Perform a meter lock-up test and relight residential customer's pilot lights.
3. Respond to emergency gas situations taking control of the scene, establishing safety perimeter and evacuation zone, determine procedure and perform safe gas shutdown.
4. Locate and repair all types of leaks or damages in the gas distribution system.
5. Install anodes and lake pipe to soil potentials.
6. Set up pressure control fittings and operate tapping machines.
7. Demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities on specific covered task of the position for the purpose of complying with Department of Transportation, Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration.
B. EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Pipeman Apprentice Qualifications:
1. Must have one year of experience in basic construction, mechanical, or related technical fields.
2. Obtain/Maintain a valid Class A (CDL) Commercial Driver's License
3. Have thorough knowledge of city and state traffic laws, including regulations regarding the hauling of heavy equipment, trailers, etc.
4. Know city streets, and roads in rural sections.
5. Know Company's safety rules and be able to administer approved methods of resuscitation and be able to render practical first aid.
6. Able to identify abnormal operating conditions
7. Must have the ability to acquire and maintain skills required as technology evolves (examples such as., accessing electronic mapping information, collecting and interpreting electronic pipe locating and leak detection information)
Pipeman 2nd Class Qualifications:
1. Must have worked for two years and qualified as Apprentice Pipeman or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all qualifications of the previous classifications.
2. Maintain a valid Class A (CDL) Commercial Driver's License
3. Have thorough knowledge of city and state traffic laws, including regulations regarding the hauling of heavy equipment, trailers, etc.
4. Know city streets, and roads in rural sections.
5. Able to identify abnormal operating conditions
6. Know Company's safely rules and be able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation and be able to render practical first aid.
7. Must have the ability to acquire and maintain skills required as technology evolves {examples such as accessing electronic mapping information, collecting and interpreting electronic pipe locating and leak detection information)
C. PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ability to detect presence of natural gas.
2. Must have full use of mental and physical faculties.
3. Must have strength and endurance adequate for arduous labor in all kinds of outdoor weather conditions.
D. PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Be particularly alert in observing hazards, abnormal operating conditions and avoiding accidents.
2. Be willing to work under unusual surroundings, as well as the normal working conditions pertaining to this job.
3. Be able to receive and transmit orders and instructions in such a manner as to inspire respect and confidence of superiors.
Notice: As a safety sensitive position, compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug and alcohol regulations is required, including but not limited to pre-employment drug testing and background screening.
Work Schedule: Follows a biweekly rotation: Monday through Thursday are 9-hour days, and Fridays alternate between 8-hour workdays and days off. This results in a 44-hour workweek followed by a 36-hour workweek, totaling 80 hours over a two-week pay period.
Commute/Travel: This position will have up to 75% commute daily to our customer locations within our Baton Rouge, Louisiana work territory. This position will provide a company vehicle. This position also commutes to work from their home address. Meaning when they leave home to head to work, they report to the Choctaw office location @ 6:30am daily. You will be on call rotation every 3-weeks.
